September Tip: Preparing for the Upcoming Flu Season

Flu season begins soon! Influenza immunization helps to protect you from the flu, and if you do get infected, prior vaccination will make your disease course less serious and decreases the likelihood of complications, such as pneumococcal pneumonia.

  • Who should receive the influenza vaccine?
    Almost everyone older than six months of age should receive it. Consult your healthcare provider for which type of vaccine is best for you and if it is safe for you to receive it.
  • When should you receive the vaccine?
    You should obtain it before the end of October every year, but later is better than not at all.
  • Why is it important?
    Influenza can cause serious and life-threatening illness, even in otherwise healthy individuals. You can also pass it to others.
  • Do flu shots cause the flu?
    No. There may be some possible side effects that mimic the flu, but this is not influenza.
